Michele recently hosted a "summer vintage hatbox swap" and I was her lucky swap partner. Although I had originally considered not joining due to other swap commitments and a pending trip to Florida, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to create something special for this talented lady.
The task was to alter a hatbox (9" diameter or larger) and fill it with vintage treasures for our partner. I set about gathering some of my favorite vintage finds to send to Michele...then looked to myof stash fabrics, laces and vintage millinery for inspiration on theme and colors.
I decided to use a beautiful old damask fabric that used to belong to my mother-in-law; in shades of old rose, soft yellows, greens and ecru/linen.
The lid was covered with satin fabric, followed by tattered/frayed linen in a soft coffee color...
then topped off with a bouquet of handmade flowers...
cream, ivory, the softest of greens, linen
vintage doily, lace, feathers, pearls
Finishing touches included a beautiful ecru tatting and tassels...
Overall, the final look of the hatbox was vintage, a bit Victorian, romantic and feminine.
Now I get to share the the stunning hatbox I received from Michele!
She used gorgeous papers to cover the box and a divine cross-stitch sampler...
Lots of gorgeous details such as silk flowers,
laces, rhinestones, vintage jewelry...
It took me awhile to admire the hatbox and all its details before I was able to (finally) open it... oh my! The contents were to die for!
This gorgeous pincushion is even lovelier in person!
Thank you, sweet Michele, for your beautiful gifts.
I have already found a special place in my studio for this wonderful keepsake.
