Celebrating the red, white and blue...

This week was full of fun activities and projects preparing for July 4th... 

I hosted a red/white/blue pennant swap for The Altered Place group. 

We were to make a pennant for each of our  three swap partners...

  (these are the pennants I made and sent)

 

I also made two extras to keep....

 

I recently found some Mahjong tiles at an estate sale and decided to make some patriotic pendants to send to my swap partners....

 

We received three pennants in return from different artists. 

Part II of the swap then required that we combine our pennants to make a July 4th banner.

 

This is how I put my pennants together; the three beautiful ones I received from Amy, Carol and Evelyn - combined with two extra ones I made for myself.

 

 

 

 

I used beautiful doilies as my background... they really help the red/white/blue details of the pennants pop.

 

My mantle, which is usually oh-so-shabby with pink and white, is now very patriotic with its beautiful banner and blue/white transferware plates!

UPDATE:  Well, I had everything set up on Friday... took some photos (seen above)...then left the house for a few hours.

When I got home, I discoverd that my dog--Luna, had decided to play a bit with the banner.  

I found it dismantled, on the floor!  A few pieces of ribbon and some buttons were missing (!?!?!)...

 

 

So, after a few adjustments, the banner went up higher (minus one pennant).

 

 

I'm just glad she is okay...  my heart skipped a beat when I saw what she had been up to.  I had visions of running to the vet to get x-rays and surgery to dislodge certain things that shouldn't be ingested.

A vintage tea party...

If you follow my blog, you know that we have an upcoming wedding in our family... my oldest, Byron, is getting married on December 21st to the most wonderful of young ladies, Kathryn. 

She is a true example of someone who is beautiful inside and out. 

 So it was with great joy that I agreed to host a bridal shower

for my future daughter-in-law.

Since I have so much Limoges china (which I have been collecting for years and saving for a special family occasion, such as this) her sisters and I agreed that a vintage tea party theme would be perfect.

 

 

As I went about my planning, I aimed for romantic vintage charm... hats, gloves, pearls....  flowers.... out came my cherished vintage linens....  

  

 

Special, handmade touches - like these dainty napkin rings made by my mother over 20 years ago.

 

 

Milk glass vessels were used for the flowers.

 

The menu consisted of delicious savories, bread and sweets....

 

 

 

 

 

A "dress up" table was set up for guests to try on gloves, pearls, hats...

 

 

 

 

..the girly girl mannequin was a big hit... not only did it serve as a hat stand, but it provided great decor for our tea room and a place for guests to place their gifts... a bit like a Christmas tree (I laid a beautiful vintage lace tablecloth underneath it, like a "tree skirt")....  it also became the favorite photo spot for guests.

 

 

 

 

(this fabulous pink concoction was borrowed from sweet Diane, of DB & Company in Excelsior.  If you are ever in the area, make sure to stop by her shoppe for beautiful gifts and home decor.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Vintage details and handmade touches made the event a bit more special...

 The beautiful Bride-to-be was wearing a 1940's bridal tiara (with pearls and rhinestones) and veil (both pieces found at an estate sale... they had been lovingly  rapped, labeled and stored by the  owner).

 

   The happy soon-to-be "Mother in Law" (me!) with the beautiful bride-to-be.

 

All in all, a fun and festive day.   Lots of beautiful memories in the making...  stories were shared, wishes were made...

Family, flowers, fun...

Since I was in Florida for my birthday, my family surprised me with a little belated birthday celebration on Sunday.  My husband always tries to make mine extra special, never failing to make me feel loved and cherished on my birthday each year.

 

 

    Bianca made me a delicious (and healthy) peanut butter cake with chocolate/peanut butter frosting.  It was like eating a huge Reese's (only yummier and guiltless)!

The "boys" showed up with beautiful flowers.... a rose shrub for my garden from one, and a fresh bouquet from the other. 

They know their mother so well (smile).

 

It was wonderful to be surrounded by love.

 

 

147 years later...

The hardest part about visiting family is the packing... and not because I have too much to fit into the suitcase (which I do), but because packing implies that I am leaving loved ones behind.

As my parents age, this process becomes even more difficult.  We have learned not to take our parents for granted; that although they may seem healthy and active, that doesn't mean they will be around forever.   We learned this the hard way after losing both of my husband's parents in a 23-month period.

So when it's time to leave, my heart tightens a bit.  

Our one-week trip is ending, but we have beautiful memories to take back with us.

My parents had all three of their children with them for the first time in almost three years.

 

Although some of the grandkids were missing, my mother truly enjoyed her time with Bianca and Nicholas.

 

My brothers and I all have July birthdays.  

My sweet sister-in-law prepared a surprise birthday celebration for us.

 

54 + 51+ 42 = 147 

wow!

we are getting old.

 

A chef came to our home and made the best paella...

It was a wonderful day.

 

 

...and a wonderful trip.

 

Quinceanera...

In the Spanish culture, every young lady looks forward to turning "15" (quince)... the tradition goes way back and is still celebrated today. 

 

 This is the age that the "girl" turns into "woman."  In the old days, it was the age in which a young lady could marry(!). 

My own mother met my father when she was 14 years old, and when he asked for her hand in marriage, my grandfather told him to come back when she turned "15"...  (by the way, he was 27 years old... ) which he did, of course.   And we are not talking Victorian era here (lol) - this was in the 1950's, Cuba!

 

  

My cousin's daugther, Analay, is celebrating her Quinces at the end of the month.

I have been making keepsake gifts and thank you gifts for guests and family members.

 

The Birthday Girl loves pink, so it was the perfect excuse to go overboard with the pinkiness!

 

It was such fun to take simple, inexpensive items, and glam them up a bit to suit the occasion.   Like this pink candle ...

A rhinestone band around the edge...a crystal pink heart...the tiniest ribbon.... and voila! a 

 

 
A sweet lavender sachet..... image was printed on silk..... 

A treat bag with "15" pink/white almonds.... the little tag reads:  "you are as sweet as candy" (eres tan dulce como un caramelo).

 

Family members also have this altered baby photo in their bag.  Again, image was printed on silk, and lots of laces and crochet pieces were used to embellish.  A total of ten were made, each a little different.

And to store it all, a simple pink Dollar Store bag (2/$1) received a make-over with more lace, a fabric/lace rosette, and tons of ribbons.

The family will all be celebrating the occasion next week when they all board the Quinceanera Cruise; one whole week of festivities!

 A special shirt for her to wear...  A plain white tank top was dressed up a bit with a crewel neckline and a tattered rosette.

Nancy's rosettes...

My mother, Nancy, asked me to make her a rosette to wear for a relative's upcoming quinceanera celebration....   

She had admired the one I wore last summer for my godchild's First Communion, and thought it would be a great addition to her somewhat plain gown.  

Not having seen her dress, and armed solely with the information that it is "light bluish/gray" and  "flowing" ... I decided to make a couple of rosettes.

this version is the closest in style to the one I wore last year.... it is made out of pale blue silk (almost a periwinkel) and vintage lace.

 

A second option is in creamy whites, with just a hint of blue in the ribbon.

 

And her third option is the more traditional "rose"

 

I also made this tag for her....

(which I'll need to translate, since her English is very basic)

 

(I fell in love with this blue roses paper, from Michael's $1 bins....)

 

I'm including another little surprise in her package...this lovely vintage hand towel monogrammed with an "N"

 

And there you have it:  Nancy's rosettes!

 

I hope she likes them!

Mi madre...

 

...my mother...she has always been the pillar of our family....the one that managed the family budget (which at times was very, very small)... that made sure I had a pretty new dress to wear on the first day of school (handmade, of course)...  that always had, and still has, some advice to give out (whether I want to hear it or not)...

Her wisdom, her caring, her love...  often taken for granted, not always appreciated...

 

Always the loving, giving, grandmother ("Abuelita")

Her grandkids are her pride and joy...

..and they adore her!  

They know they are lucky to have her in their lives.

We're getting married!

My eldest, Byron, and his fiancee, Katt, have selected a wedding date and venue... I am so excited!   We will be having a Christmas wedding (December 21st) and I couldn't be any happier ((smile)).

If you have children you know how we hope and pray that when they grow up and fall in love, that the person they select is "worthy" (maybe not the best choice of words) and that they are right for each other... well, Katt is exactly that for my Byron.   If I had to select a daughter-in-law, Katt would my first and only choice.  Byron is a very lucky man and our family is blessed for having her. 

So... back to the wedding...  Visions of candlelight, twinkling lights, red and cream roses... oh, I'm getting ahead of myself!  I don't even know what the bride wants; and I need to be careful not to be the meddling "mother in law" (this will be a challenge, I admit)...  

but I have had a lot of fun browsing through online photos!  

Of course, I was attacted to all the PINK wedding themes (which definitely will not be the case here, as my future DIL is not a pink lover).

All this pink browsing put me in the mood for some pink roses.... so I ran out and purchased a little bouquet at our corner grocer.  ((sigh))

What happens after the turkey?...

The cooking, feasting and clean-up is done.

We are all sitting around with stuffed bellies, content... enjoying each other's company.  

A bit sad because my baby girl is in Spain this year and for the first time since she was born 22 years ago, I am celebrating Thanksgiving without her.

Another sad thought creeps into our minds (although it is ever-present in our hearts)... we miss our dear Bebe and Swinton (my husband's parents).  Just two short years ago, Bebe was with us; and four years ago, they were both with us.  

But nonetheless, we are thankful.  There are so many things in our lives that have meaning and that we don't always take time to appreciate.  

To me, Thanksgiving is a reminder to not take anything in this life for granted.

  

Enjoy the todays; enjoy each other.

I had a wonderful "50th" birthday yesterday!

My family all added their little touches to make it special for me.

 

My husband celebrated his birthday on July 14th and we decided not to exchange gifts this year in lieu of a trip out to wine country later this summer. Yet, he still managed to put his special touch throughout the day... like when I awakened to find a bowl of fresh strawberries and cream on my nightstand (waiting for me!)... yum!  I also found the latest "Artful Blogging" edition on my kitchen counter, with a bow tied around it...  those are the little things that make me smile.

 

Our daughter, Bianca, loves to cook and bake.  She is a health nut, so she is always looking for ways to take a recipe and make it healthier (lower fat, lower sugar, higher protein, etc.).  For my birthday, I had requested my favorite:  coconut cake.  Not exactly your average low calorie, low fat cake!  But she went to work on creating a most delicious, yet healthier version of it..

 

 ... one of her main substitutions was using brown, raw sugar instead of the processed (white) version.  The frosting was lo-fat sourcream....  it was amazing!

 

Our middle son, Jordan, takes gift-giving very seriously.  He is a seasoned shopper who likes to find "just the right gift" for someone.    His gifts are never extravagant, as he is always on a tight budget, but they are always thoughtful.

 

Here's my birthday gift...

 

... his words were " she's kind of plain right now, but I know you'll work on her and make her look the way you want."  Does he "get" his mother, or what?!?

I named her Dottie and she is staying "as is" for now and joining her new friends on my porch.

I'm still smiling.

She sells sea shells...

I'm back home in Minnesota (haven't even unpacked yet).  It was wonderful seeing my family and spending time with my mother; but it sure is nice to be home!

Today I'm sharing some photos of seashells decor, taken at my brother's home....  after all, how can you live in Florida and not go with a nautical or beach theme in your decorating?  My sister-in-law is a bit "tired" of it, but my brother is a big fishing fanatic and loves anything nautical.  I think they've come up with a wonderful compromise, by incorporating a few pieces here and there.

... they've recently visited Mexico and brought back some beautiful pieces collected by the sea...

... I fell in love with their clever idea of using seashells as "mulch" outside...

Today I'm sharing a couple of my favorite photos taken this week...

As I mentioned in my last post, things are finally happening in my garden!  Yippee!  I'm even "OK" with seeing a few yellow dandelions showing their faces in my lawn- 

This morning, as I stepped outside to get in my car for work (didn't even have to put it in the garage overnight!), I was welcomed by the scent of budding lilac trees and flowering fruit trees.  The sweetness is (almost) overpowering; and I ran back inside to grap something to cut a few branches with!

First came the cherry blossoms...  they adorned our table this evening... (my two sons -plus one fiancee- joined us for dinner)...

 

I threw together a quick meal, with a big salad using the tomatoes and baby lettuce I purchased at our local Farmer's Market this past weekend...  my sons are famous for wolfing down salads, so "a big salad" is never "big" enough.

 

 

I also cut some branches from another flowering tree... this one has pretty pink blooms.... which went on my mantle in a recently damaged glass container (thanks to my 6-month old puppy)... some candles.. and viola!  instant festivities!

God Bless, Nicholas

My godson, Nicholas, recently celebrated his First Communion....  it seems like just yesterday that he was born...  and here he is now; learning about God; giving his first confession (he said "his knees were shaking")... 

The last few months, as his special day approached and we would talk over the phone, I tried very hard not to laugh.  His stories about Bible class and nervousness about upcoming confession were precious.  Lovely memories for me to have and stories to share with him when he's an adult man.

 
(peacefully sleeping the morning of his 1st communion...  I love watching children sleep; their innocence just shines through... you want to keep them safe and sheltered from the reality of life.

 

(all dressed up....   you told his mother that he did like "these fluffy pants" when he first tried them on.  "Fluffy" meaning thick fabric with pleats!)

 

 

 

...the Reverend was very outspoken and entertaining; he kept the hour-and-a-half long ceremony hopping... a lot different than my early days in the Catholic church!

Once the service was over, everyone headed back to the house for refreshments.  My sister-in-law, Barbara, did a wonderful job decorating.

Bianca

When we were expecting our daughter 21 years ago, we struggled a bit with choosing a name.   We wanted a name that was not too common, a bit unique (without being weird), that didn't follow some name trend, and that sounded beautiful in both English and Spanish.

Victoria was a strong contender... but while I loved it, I didn't particularly care for the nickname "Vicky" (due to a childhood experience!); which I'm sure some folks would insist on calling her.

Then my husband came up with Bianca.  Short, sweet, elegant, melodic in both Spanish and English (both sets of grandparents would be pleased).

Bianca...  (origin)Italian; (meaning) white, fair one

We tried the name out... said it out loud; wrote it out with our last name....  but it was missing something.  Then we added "Victoria" as the middle name and MAGIC! 

Our baby girl had a name!

She's always been such a joy to us; everything you could ask for (and more) in a daughter!  She is truly beautiful on the outside and inside....   bright, kind, caring.  She graduates from college this June and I'm left with a feeling of awe.  Where have the years gone?   I know that when I see her in her cap and gown, looking "all grown up" and ready to take on the world, I will weep.  Like a baby.

Bebe-inspired pinks...

As the 6-month anniversary of the death of my dear Bebe approaches (April 18th), I find myself thinking more and more about her.  The almost-perfect Mother In Law.  I miss her terribly; miss picking up the telephone to chat about what I found at the antiques store, what I made today, what beautiful new blog I discovered...   she was my crafting soul-mate.  Always supporting, always inspiring, always there for me.

I finally got enough courage to starting incorporating bits and pieces of her ribbons, her buttons, her laces, etc., into my crafts.   I have to confess that I am skimpy with their application, as I am afraid to run out.  But she had such beautiful things that it seems like a shame to let them just sit in storage and not use them.

 

... the hat was recently acquired at a thrift store... not old, but definitely used (made in Australia!).  I fell in love with it's shape and structure; but needed a little something to spruce it up.  I made this rosette, which includes burlap, beads, buttons, and laces from Bebe's stash.   

 
 

... shoes (especially Victorian-era) were one of Bebe's favorite things...  I remember when I purchased a few shoe forms and had a conversation with her about what to do with them...  we were both heavily into our Decoupaging Stage and decided to apply that technique using old catalog papers....  aged it a bit with ink... 

 

...the ribbon is silk Midori (also from Bebe's stash)... 

 
 
One of her many talents was making silk ribbon flowers...  she made it look so easy! 

A couple of weeks ago, I found this ribbon flower rosette (spied at a local antiques shoppe)...   it was tucked in a cup on a bottom shelf, but the pretty pink drew me in.  As I  held it in my hands to admire the handiwork, I realized tears were flowing down my checks.  And then, I turned it over to look at the finishing on the back and was awed... there was a velvet leaf and a cream ribbon which was stamped (or printed?) with the creator's name.  It read "Luna."

Luna is the name we gave our German Shepherd puppy (our gift to my husband this last Christmas).  Luna was born (we realized after adopting her) just 4 days before Bebe's death; the last day of Bebe's life in which she was actually awake and aware, before succumbing to cancer on October 18th. 

Coincidence?  Fate?  Karma?  It doesn't matter if you believe.  I do.

The rosette came home with me.

Today I am thankful...

We get so caught up in the festivities this time of year that we sometimes forget to stop for a moment and take it all IN.   What does it all mean?  Is it just about the food we're preparing, the gifts we're wrapping, the parties we're attending?  Do we truly remember why we are doing all this?  Do we remember to appreciate what and who we have in lives?  Regardless of our ethnic background, our spiritual and religious beliefs, we all share one thing in common:  FAMILY.  

It's been a year of loss for our family (actually, the last 2 years)... my husband lost his mother just a short month ago, his father 24 months ago; my children have lost the most amazing grandparents ever; I have lost the mother of my Beloved, a dear friend, confidant, my creative inspiration.

In January, we lost our pet of 15+ years - Sasha; in September we lost a second pet (of 17+ years), Polly.

And through it all, we were a FAMILY... and I am thankful for them.  We are stronger because of our losses.   We have leaned on each other during our darkest hours, wept together,even laughed together as we remembered our loved ones.

 I am THANKFUL for my patient, kind, loving, honest, respectful, husband; my Best Friend.

I am THANKFUL for my beautiful, smart, kind-hearted, wonderful CHILDREN.  They have brought me so much joy and I cannot thank them enough for putting up with their crazy Mom.

Someone very near and dear to my heart is fond of bluebirds and blue jays, so it is quite apropo that I post about her today.

Pink is the color of love...

What is it about the color pink that makes us smile inside?  Do you know what I mean?  Whenever I'm out, and see a window display, or an antiques booth, brimming with pinks of all shades I just feel.... happy.  Loved.  Like everything in the world is okay.  This feeling lasts for just a brief moment, but I can always rely on it.

As many of you know, we have been in Philadelphia for a week now, at my mother-in-law Bebe's bedside.  The family is here to share these last few weeks, days, moments of her life with her.

I've been browsing through Bebe's extensive collection of books on crafting, ribbon embroidery, decorating, decoupaging, cooking.  You name any craft that's been popular in the last 25 years and she's got a book on it!  I could spend days just going through them!

AND

from "Flowercrafts" by Deena Beverley (1997), this recipe for

INFUSED FLOWER OIL

 

 

 Gather:  fragrant flowers, sterile glass jar (with stopper), cold-pressed sunflower oil, sieve

1.  Remove the petals from the flowers and pack as many as possible into the sterile glass jar.

2.  Pour in enough oil to cover the petals and replace the stopper.  Let the jar sit outside in the sun for a few weeks, bringing it indoors at night.  Strain through a sieve and discard the flowers.

"Bebe" (aka The Mother-in-Law)

About six weeks ago, I participated for the very first time in Beverly's Pink Saturday blog party.  It was a special Saturday, as we were all posting about breast cancer, sharing stories of love, loss, and faith. 

At that time, I shared my own personal touch with cancer, the story of Anita (we call her Bebe).  Our family is heading out to Philadelphia this weekend; my beloved mother-in-law is not doing well.

So, it is with much love, respect, and admiration that I dedicate today's Pink Saturday post to our dearest Bebe.

 

 ...this fabric collage was a project I began a few weeks ago as a gift for Bebe.   The doves cross-stitched embroidery I completed over 12 years ago when I worked on monogrammed towels for my inlaws on their 40th wedding anniversary... the embroidery sat in an "uncompleted projects" box, which I recently opened.  I thought she might like having this little quilt (I've included vintage laces and linens) to hang on her bedroom wall.   It's now coming with me to Philadelphia; just don't know if she'll be alert enough to see it .

My last rose bloom of this year....  I discovered this lone pink stem yesterday.... there it sat, very proudly (almost regally) in the midst of all the browns, yellows, and golds of Fall.
